One pull, two wipes: the party lost four players at 1:11, returned into a fight that had never reset, and lost six more — and when the last one died the pack was 75% dead with three mobs under 12%.

The key ran 2:21 and contained exactly one pull. The group engaged eleven mobs at 0:20 — four Ravenous Descendants, five Primal Serpents, a Ritual Chieftain and a Twinfang Harrower — and killed one of them. Eleven deaths followed in fifty-nine seconds, and the log stops with nobody having re-entered combat.

It was much closer than the grades suggest. The pack held 95.9M health between the eleven; the group removed 72.3M of it. When the last player died a Primal Serpent was on 87,213 health — 1.2% — and two Ravenous Descendants were on 10.8% and 11.5%. Fourteen more seconds at the output the group was already producing at 0:40 would have cleared three of the eleven and broken the pull.

Those seconds went on the run-back instead. Four players were down at 1:11; the tank held alone for thirty-one seconds while the others released and returned one at a time into a fight nothing had reset, and six more deaths followed. Party output fell from 17.4M per ten seconds at its peak to 3.0M, and the pack moved from 28% remaining to 25% across the whole second half.

Hyporock's D is an artifact of two things, and the healing is neither of them. The party took 363k damage a second — twice the 183k/s of the Altar of Fangs +11 that timed three hours earlier the same night — and the `response` axis was broken on a key this short. Last two sections.

How it went

  1. 0:46Full wipeDevourer DH, Hyporock, Fury Warrior, Assass Rogue and Blood DK in 60 s, to Ravenous Claws, Piercing Hiss, Unstable Totem and Melee. Devourer DH went first. 7 of 11 with no defensive pressed.
  2. 2:21The key was dropped 2:21 in.

What to change, biggest first

  1. Kill the Ritual Chieftain. Its Unstable Totem is instant, unkickable, and did 19% of all damage taken in the key from a single cast at 0:25; it stops when the Chieftain does, and the Chieftain finished on 5.5M — about eight seconds of the group's peak output.
  2. Kick Piercing Hiss. Five of twelve got through for 5.9M, and it landed five of the eleven killing blows, including both of Hyporock's deaths.
  3. On a wipe, release together and come back together. Six of the eleven deaths were players arriving alone into a pack of ten while the tank was still holding it; they cost 30 seconds of timer and moved the pack three percentage points.
  4. If the pull is going badly, finish something. Three mobs were under 12% when the last player died and a Primal Serpent was on 1.2%; every one that dies removes its own Piercing Hiss and Fetid Spit from the rest of the fight.

Notes

Where the numbers need a second look

The two minutes, in order

21:04:15 the key starts. 0:20 the group pulls; the mobs are already in log range at the key start, so this is the pack at the instance door.

0:25 — a Ritual Chieftain casts Unstable Totem. There is no SPELL_CAST_START for it anywhere in the log, so it is instant and cannot be kicked. It pulses for the rest of the fight: 134 ticks, 6,451,833 across the party, 19% of everything the group took, from that one cast.

0:46 — first death, Devourer DH, to Ravenous Claws.
1:05 — Hyporock: 952,276 over 1.6s (Toxic Breath 692,207 then Piercing Hiss 260,069), 53,495 healing received.
1:11 — Fury Warrior, Devourer DH and Assass Rogue die in the same second, taking the party to four down. The Twinfang Harrower dies in that same second: the only enemy killed all key.

1:11 to 1:42 — the tank is the only player alive. He takes 3,050,769 over the last 13.5s, with 1,659,467 healing arriving from Hyporock and Assass Rogue, and dies at 1:42 with no defensive pressed in that window.

1:29, 1:30, 1:39, 1:44, 1:45 — five more deaths as players return. 1:53, the last damage event. 2:21, the log ends.

Nothing died, so the damage never stopped

This is the run in one number. The group dealt 74.1M into the pack and removed 72.3M of 95.9M health — 75%. One mob died.

What was still standing when the last player fell:

  Primal Serpent 87,213 of 7,075,486 1.2%
  Ravenous Descendant 933,334 of 8,647,816 10.8%
  Ravenous Descendant 998,621 of 8,647,816 11.5%
  Ravenous Descendant 1,510,552 of 8,647,816 17.5%
  Primal Serpent 1,290,239 of 7,075,486 18.2%
  Ravenous Descendant 2,291,293 of 8,647,816 26.5%
  Primal Serpent 2,922,821 of 7,075,486 41.3%
  Ritual Chieftain 5,468,935 of 12,578,639 43.5%
  Primal Serpent 3,774,454 of 7,075,486 53.3%
  Primal Serpent 4,389,662 of 7,075,486 62.0%

Every mob left alive is another Piercing Hiss and another Fetid Spit, so a pull where nothing dies gets harder as it goes rather than easier. The Twinfang Harrower — 13.4M, the largest pool in the pack — was focused and killed. After it went down at 1:11 the damage spread, and nothing else was taken across the line.

Mob health here is measured rather than estimated: the advanced block on every SPELL_DAMAGE carries the target's current and maximum health.

Where the 34 million came from

Four sources are 72% of everything the party took:

Ravenous Claws 7,068,092 (5,555,469 of it on the tank)
Unstable Totem 6,451,833 (134 ticks, from ONE cast at 0:25)
Piercing Hiss 5,925,558 (5 of 12 casts leaked)
  Fetid Spit 5,040,512

Unstable Totem is the one worth acting on, because it is the only one with a single point of failure. It is instant, so it cannot be interrupted; it belongs to the Ritual Chieftain, and it stops when the Chieftain does. The Chieftain finished on 5,468,935 health — about eight seconds of the group's peak output — while doing 19% of all incoming damage for every second it lived. It also landed two of the eleven killing blows.

Piercing Hiss is the interrupt line: seven stopped, five through, 5.9M, and five of the eleven killing blows including both of Hyporock's deaths.

One dispel finding, and it is small: Paralyzing Shots was left up once for seven seconds and 986,075 damage came out of it. Hyporock cleansed one of the two.

The run-back cost more than the wipe

There is no resurrection of any kind in this log — no SPELL_RESURRECT, no Raise Ally, no Rebirth, no Soulstone. The players who died are casting and dealing damage again within seconds: Devourer DH died at 21:05:01, cast Glide at 21:05:05, and then dealt damage on 231 events before dying again at 1:11. They released and ran back, which the pull's position at the instance door makes fast. (That four-second turnaround is the weakest number in this report and the one worth checking against what people remember; everything else in this section follows from timestamps alone.)

The tank did not die at 1:11, so nothing reset, and each returning player arrived alone into a pack of ten. Party damage dealt per ten seconds:

  0:30-0:40 12,310,258
  0:40-0:50 17,352,825 <- peak
  0:50-1:00 10,701,639
  1:00-1:10 9,612,911
  1:10-1:20 6,845,830 <- four players down
  1:20-1:30 3,565,021
  1:30-1:40 3,742,407
  1:40-1:50 3,008,384

The second half produced a fifth of peak output and six of the eleven deaths. At +11 the timer charges five seconds a death, so the eleven cost 55 seconds of a 2:21 key, and the six that came after the fight was already lost cost 30 of them.

The counterfactual is not free: had nobody run back, the tank dies alone and the pack resets to full. But the pack did not need to reset — it needed about fourteen seconds of output the group had already demonstrated, and returning one at a time never assembled that.

The healer's D is the axis and the intake, not the healing

Hyporock's measured output per ten seconds, effective healing with overheal beside it:

  0:20-0:30 1,328,162 (30% overheal)
  0:30-0:40 3,139,373 (33%) <- 314k HPS, the party's worst window
  0:40-0:50 1,779,946 ( 1%)
  0:50-1:00 1,797,508 ( 2%)
  1:00-1:10 948,835 (25%) <- dies at 1:05

11,245,985 effective across 93.7 seconds of combat is 120,021 HPS, against 91,687 HPS per combat second in the Altar of Fangs +11 that timed at 17:53 the same night. Overheal for the key was 21% against 49% in that timed run: almost nothing was wasted, because there was nowhere for a wasted heal to go.

Every major cooldown was spent, and spent early: Avenging Wrath 0:23, Blessing of Sacrifice 0:24, Divine Protection 0:26, Aura Mastery 0:35, Divine Shield 0:45, Lay on Hands 0:47. Aura Mastery at 0:35 lands inside the 0:30-0:40 window, the single worst ten seconds the party had. That is correct timing, not a panic dump.

So two axes here are describing the run rather than the player. `throughput` at 6 is coverage of 47%, against a band cut on keys where the median is 73%; at 363k/s incoming — twice the timed run's 183k/s — 47% is close to what a Holy Paladin at ceiling produces. `response` at 0 was a bug, now fixed, and removing it moved the grade from F (45) to D (56).

What is left that is actually Hyporock's: 80% activity and 33.6 casts a minute against 97% and 43.3 in the timed key, most of which is the ~25 seconds spent dead or running; Holy Power overcapped 12 of 41 generated (29%); and Blessing of Protection never pressed on a pull where four players were eaten by melee — though with 1:34 of combat in the whole key, one run is not evidence of a habit.

Two things this key changed in the tool

First, this run did not exist. `logfile.find_runs` closed a key only on a CHALLENGE_MODE_END or on the next START, so a key whose log simply stops — which is exactly what abandoning one looks like — was dropped from the listing entirely. It is always the LAST run in the file, which is always the one being asked about. Fixed, with a regression test.

Second, `response` scored 0 for a healer who opened at 314k HPS with 1% overheal. The axis is a ratio of the healing rate inside the party's worst windows to the rate across the whole fight, and `party_spikes` returns twenty eight-second windows — a ceiling of 160 seconds. On 93 seconds of combat the windows cover the fight end to end, numerator and denominator are the same seconds, and the ratio is pinned at 1.0 whatever the healer did. 1.0 sits below the band, so it scored zero. It now drops out under rule 3 and says why. Because 160 seconds is a hard ceiling the guard can only fire below 320 seconds of combat, so no completed key in the archive moved.

What would falsify this

Worth being explicit, because this is built entirely from one log:

  • The four-second death-to-Glide turnaround is the weakest claim here. If the group had a combat resurrection the client did not log, the whole run-back section changes shape. Ask the people who were there.
  • `affix 158` is unnamed. Xal'atath casts "Xal'atath's Bargain" (461870) at 0:04 and a Voidbound Emissary spawns at 1:33 and buffs the pack at 1:52 — after the last death at 1:45 — so the seasonal affix contributed nothing to this wipe. The label is printed as a raw id on purpose rather than guessed.
  • No over-exposure was reported for anyone, so none of the "(peers 0)" traps apply here.
  • The death count has no external cross-check: an abandoned key writes no CHALLENGE_MODE_END, so the usual arithmetic against the game's own timer is unavailable. Eleven is the raw UNIT_DIED count, all eleven flagged as real deaths rather than unconscious.
