Lack of interruptsShadowbolt Volley leaked 6 of 11Demo LockArcane MageShadow Priest

One interruptible spell is in the killing burst of all five deaths in the opening wipe. Shadowbolt Volley hits a non-tank for more than half their health, it was cast eleven times, and six of them landed.

This key was lost in the first ninety seconds, on the same opening pull that four previous Voidscar Arena runs cleared without a single death.

The mechanism is not subtle. Voidtouched Magi cast Shadowbolt Volley eleven times on that pull and six of those casts got through. It is an interruptible cast that hits everybody, and on this roster it hits for 455,705 on the healer, 445,481 on the shadow priest, 385,936 on the warlock. Set that against their health pools -- 779,020, 1,004,508, 870,450 -- and one leaked cast takes half the party to roughly 45% of health at the same instant. Two of them inside a few seconds is a wipe with no healing answer.

Shadowbolt Volley appears in the damage burst of every one of the five deaths on that pull, and in four of them it is the single largest component. The killing blows themselves were tiny -- Shadow Priest was finished by a 195,844 leap, the healer by a 97,345 leap. Nothing killed anyone directly. The volley emptied the health bars and whatever landed next collected.

The group stopped 17 of 48 stoppable casts, 35%. The four previous runs of this dungeon stopped 74%, 76%, 77% and 81%. That is the whole story of the key in one number.

Abandoning was arithmetically correct and was not a close call. Eight deaths at 15 seconds each is 2:00 of penalty spent inside the first 5:51 of a +13.

What to change, biggest first

  1. Assign Shadowbolt Volley by name before the pull. Voidtouched Magi, eleven casts on the opener, and one leaked cast takes the party to half health -- it is the single highest-value kick in the dungeon.
  2. Get the three damage dealers to six kicks each rather than six between them. The tank was already doing double his share and cannot cover more.
  3. Treat a death in Voidscar Arena as costing 15 seconds even though you stand straight back up. The dungeon hides the price; the timer still charges it.
  4. Reset the opener rather than healing through it once two people are down. Four previous runs cleared that wave with zero deaths, so a wave that has already killed two is not going to be recovered.
  5. Arcane Mage: Ice Block and Alter Time went unpressed across two deaths. Prismatic Barrier alone is not the answer to a 455k party-wide nuke.
  6. For the Chitigoth race, hold damage cooldowns for it rather than spending them on the opening wave -- both deaths in the +11 and two here came from the same aura ramping past what could be healed.

Notes

Where the numbers need a second look

Nobody in this dungeon does a corpse run, and it does not help

Measured, and worth knowing before reading the death list.

Every one of the eight deaths was followed by that same player casting a spell again a few seconds later, and there is no resurrection spell anywhere in the run -- no battle rez, no soulstone, nothing. The gaps:

Shadow Priest 0:25 back casting after 2.1s
Hyporock 0:52 back casting after 2.9s
Shadow Priest 0:52 back casting after 9.1s
Arcane Mage 0:55 back casting after 3.9s
Demo Lock 1:01 back casting after 7.8s
Arcane Mage 5:12 back casting after 7.0s
Shadow Priest 5:33 back casting after 5.1s
  Demo Lock 5:34 log ends

So the Arena stands you back up where you fell. Dying here feels almost free in the moment: the pull never stops, nobody runs back, the fight just continues one player short for three seconds.

It is not free. The timer charges the full penalty anyway. That is checked against three earlier Voidscar keys that were completed, where the grader can back-solve the number of deaths from the clock: the +8 solves to 5.93 against 6 real deaths, the +10 to 3.91 against 4, the +11 to 1.95 against 2. The penalty lands in full.

This is the trap the dungeon sets. Eight deaths that cost nothing visible cost 2:00, and the group had spent it before the second pack.

The opening pull, against the four times it went fine

Pull 1 is the same opening wave every run, and it starts at the same moment every time -- 0:09 to 0:10 into the key on all five records.

key kicks on pull 1 damage taken deaths
  +5 13/21 62% 14,072,019 0
  +8 20/28 71% 19,029,723 0
  +10 13/21 62% 13,182,585 0
  +11 18/26 69% 14,276,902 0
  +13 17/48 35% 36,789,249 5

Read the middle column first. The same opening pack did 2.6x the damage it has ever done. Then read the left column, and note what did NOT happen: the group did not stop fewer casts. Seventeen is inside the normal range of thirteen to twenty.

What changed is the denominator. Forty-eight stoppable casts came out instead of twenty-one to twenty-eight. The pull ran 102 seconds for twelve kills, where the +11 killed the same twelve in about sixty-four, so the enemies were alive long enough to cast roughly twice as much -- and once players started dying the damage went down and the pull got longer again.

The spells that leaked, all proven interruptible because this party has kicked them before:

Lava Bolt Enthralled Shaman 23 of 32 leaked
Shadowbolt Volley Voidtouched Magi 6 of 11 leaked
Demoralizing Shout 2 of 5 leaked

Lava Bolt landed the killing blow on Shadow Priest at 0:52 and on Arcane Mage at 0:55.

Who was stopping casts

Seventeen stops. Eleven of them were the tank.

  Doryhunky 6 interrupts + 5 CC = 11 stops
  Arcane Mage 3
Demo Lock 2 (both from the pet, Haadhun)
  Shadow Priest 1
Hyporock 0 -- Holy Paladin has no interrupt; correctly not scored

Four players had a kick. Across 5:24 of combat their cooldowns offered somewhere near fifty presses between them. Twelve were used.

The tank is not the problem here and should not be asked to do more; he was already stopping more than double his share. The three damage dealers stopped six casts between them across the whole key.

The second attempt, and what actually killed it

Pull 3 at 3:30 was a different failure and mostly not a controllable one.

Chitigoth casts Insidious Aura on itself roughly every twenty seconds -- 13:42:16, 13:42:36, 13:42:57 -- and each cast pulses raid-wide damage. It did 12,914,734 across 69 hits, 14% of everything the party took all key, and it hit all five players almost identically: 14 hits on the tank, 14 on the healer, 15, 15 and 11 on the damage dealers. Damage that lands on the tank and the healer in equal measure is not a positioning mistake.

It killed Arcane Mage at 5:12 and Shadow Priest at 5:33, carrying 1,184,891 and 1,221,864 of their final bursts.

This is a repeat offender and the archive shows it. In the Voidscar +11 on 25 August, both deaths in the entire key were Insidious Aura, twenty seconds apart. It is a race: the aura ramps and you either kill Chitigoth or it kills you, and arriving at Chitigoth already down 2:00 of timer with a party that has been dying is arriving in the wrong shape.

Arcane Mage cast Greater Invisibility 1.4 seconds after Demo Lock's last death. That is the moment the key was called.

Fairness checks run before any of this was written

Four claims were tested and three of them were thrown away.

Shadow Priest's `never pressed: Dispel Magic, Mass Dispel, Purify Disease` is vacuous. The dispel axis dropped out of the healer's sheet in this key for lack of anything dispellable to judge. Do not read those lines as a fault.

Arcane Mage's `never pressed: Remove Curse, Spellsteal` is the same and should be ignored. `Ice Block` and `Alter Time` are not -- those are live defensives on a player who died twice.

The tank's `damage 79` is not a measurement of the tank. The band it is scored against was cut when the corpus was almost entirely this player in +2 to +9 keys, and has not been re-cut. Nobody should be told to do more damage on that evidence.

Hyporock's `over-exposed: Fel Steps x8 (peers 2)` is noise. Fel Steps did 1,208,381 party-wide, 1% of intake. The mechanics axis is effectively clean for all five.

Casts-per-minute is printed for every player and is not quoted anywhere above; the estimator behind it has been measured swinging 3x on the same player in one night.
