No defensiveno personals once healing cooldowns endedgroupLack of healshealer far below the group's item levelResto ShamanTipLay on Hands near half health while damage keeps coming

The opener is the standard pull and the damage was close enough; people died once the healer's cooldowns ran out.

Guardian Druid gathered the Striker, Gatherer and Matriarch packs into one opener. Nearly every timed key at this level on Warcraft Logs takes the same pull, and none of the sampled groups wiped on it.

Over the first minute this party's damage sat at the low end of those timed groups, and Hyporock was top damage. The trouble started when Spirit Link and Healing Tide ended. Razor Dive bleeds and Rotten Ground kept ticking, nobody pressed a personal defensive, and five people died inside 28 s.

Resto Shaman was also well below the rest of the group's item level, which makes this pull harder to heal once the cooldowns are gone.

How it went

  1. 1:35Full wipeHyporock, Resto Shaman, Arms Warrior, Arcane Mage and Guardian Druid in 28 s, to Rotten Ground, Razor Dive and Melee. Hyporock went first. 3 of 5 with no defensive pressed.
  2. 2:45The key was dropped 2:45 in, with 28:09 left on the timer.

What to change, biggest first

  1. Hyporock: Lay on Hands near half health while damage is still coming in
  2. Everyone: plan a personal defensive for when Spirit Link and Healing Tide end
  3. Save Blessing of Protection for a Razor Dive target, not a pre-pull press
  4. Split the opener while the healer's gear catches up

What the group changes together

Plan the moment the healer's cooldowns end. On this opener that is roughly when the pack is half dead, and it is when people died. Each player should have one personal defensive ready for that window, and Lay on Hands and Blessing of Protection should go out early rather than as last resorts. If the healer is still catching up on gear, pull the Striker and Gatherer packs first and the Matriarch pack second.

The comp

The comp was fine. It had a lust, a battle res on the tank, and stuns on three players.

Notes

Where the numbers need a second look

What other groups do with this pull

Sampled 15 timed +17s from Warcraft Logs rankings (pages 1, 10 and 20, runs of 22.6 to 26.5 min) plus 9 top +18s. 13 of the 15 +17s took the same 14-16 mob opener (4 Strikers, 7 Gatherers, Matriarch, 2 Yearlings, 2 Tenders) and killed it in 55-125 s with 0-1 deaths. Over the first 60 s of the pull, 15 timed groups with a Ret did 2.25-3.15M damage per second (median 2.82M); this party did 2.28M. Those Rets did 236k-991k (median 767k); Hyporock did 647k at a similar item level. Strikers and Gatherers died together in those runs, so kill order was not the difference. Your archive shows two earlier first-pull wipes on this opener at +15 (09-18 and 09-19).

Corrections

The first version blamed Guardian Druid for chaining four packs; that is the standard route. The second version said the group did half the damage of timed groups; that compared this party's whole-key average, dead time included, with other groups' pull damage. On equal terms over the first 60 s the party was about 20% below the median.
