Raj'kess's Thundering Storm wiped the group after the opening pull had spent every big healing cooldown.

The key was one long pull through the opening trash and into Raj'kess. That pack cost Hyporock a death and drew out Tranquility, Rallying Cry, Divine Shield and Time Warp. All of them were still on cooldown when Raj'kess cast Thundering Storm, which pulses on all 5 players and cannot be kicked or dodged (from the log).

The first storm killed Resto Druid and Arms Warrior. The second killed Arms Warrior and Hyporock. Barkskin and Divine Protection were both ready for the first storm, and they went out just before and just after it. The group abandoned with Raj'kess at half health (from the log).

WHEN
As Raj'kess starts casting Thundering Storm.
WHY
It came back just before the first storm, which left you at 10% health. You pressed it between the storms, so the second storm found it on cooldown and killed you.
PAYOFF
Its 30% cut on a storm is more than the pulse that killed you.

  4. 3:17The key was dropped 3:17 in, with 25:36 left on the timer.

What to change, biggest first

  1. Everyone: press a personal defensive as Raj'kess starts casting Thundering Storm, both times.
  2. Before pulling Raj'kess, name the raid cooldown for each storm, since the opening pack spends Tranquility and Rallying Cry.
  3. Call CC on the opening shamans out loud, and leave a Paralysed shaman asleep.
  4. Brewmaster Monk: gather the loose Sethrak and Tuskarr before rolling ahead to the Magi.

What the group changes together

Raj'kess casts Thundering Storm twice, and each one deals more than a full health bar to everyone (from the log). Decide before the pull which personal and which raid cooldown covers each storm. This time the opening pack had used Tranquility, Rallying Cry and Time Warp about a minute earlier, and the storms found only personals. On the opening pull, call CC out loud. Hyporock had called the left shaman for a kick and did not know Brewmaster Monk had Paralysed it. Hyporock broke the Paralysis and then had to kick the Lava Bolt it started.

The comp

The comp had Bloodlust, 2 battle resses and the dispels this dungeon asks for, so it did not shape the result.

Notes

Where the numbers need a second look

Hyporock's death at 0:20, traced

The Feral Saberon's Savage Leap landed on Hyporock at 0:17, and its bleed did 573,345 in 3.5 s, from full health to 291k. At 0:19 Blade of Justice broke Brewmaster Monk's Paralysis on the left Enthralled Shaman. It swung once for 93,729, and Rebuke stopped its Lava Bolt. Eternal Flame then healed 165,199. At 0:20 the Lost Sethrak and the second Longtooth Tuskarr hit in the same millisecond for 275,109 and 276,175. Neither was on the tank; both had been hitting Resto Druid at 0:16. The Consecration from Blade of Justice touched both, and Eternal Flame adds healing threat. The log has no threat values, so that last step is inferred. Divine Protection and Blessing of Protection were both ready.

Thundering Storm, measured

Each storm was 5 pulses, 1.5 s apart, of 303,516 before mitigation on every player. The raw hit was the same from 3 yd to 27 yd from Raj'kess, so distance did not matter. Ironbark and Prismatic Barrier cut Arcane Mage's pulses to about 166k. Spell Reflection cut Arms Warrior's first pulse of the second storm by 20%, from 267k to 214k. Hyporock took about 240k a pulse with nothing pressed, so a storm was about 1.2M against an 891k health bar.
