Atroxus wiped because the Toxic Creeper lived; the hunter aimed all 11 of his casts at the boss.

The key was alive until Atroxus. Taz'Rah died 35 seconds behind the pace of your timed run on Saturday, with one death so far. On Atroxus the Toxic Creeper's aura killed four of you within seconds, and the tank fell to the next Hulking Claw. Arms Warrior and you were on the Creeper within a second. BM Hunter pressed Bestial Wrath as it appeared and aimed every cast at the boss, so only his cleave reached it. With his boss damage on the Creeper, it dies about five seconds before anyone does. Your own damage was third of three, mostly from a Wings that sat ready in the opener.

WHEN
When Wings comes back mid-pull and the pack still has 20 or more seconds to live
WHY
In the opener it sat ready for about 30 seconds while you were on the pack or on Raj'kess. The trip back for the Shaman excuses the rest.
PAYOFF
Raj'kess gets a second Wings window, worth about 4M damage.

  4. 31:37The key was dropped 31:37 in, with 0:00 left on the timer.

What to change, biggest first

  1. BM Hunter: swap to the Toxic Creeper the moment Atroxus roars.
  2. Hyporock: press Wings when it comes back if the pack will live 20 more seconds.
  3. Guardian Druid: say before the key whether the first pack goes to the Magi.
  4. Resto Shaman: step out of Poison Pool before its second tick.

What the group changes together

Guardian Druid wasn't planning to take the Magi on the first pull, and the hunter's Kill Command pulled it, so the group learned the plan mid-pull. Say before the key whether the first pack goes to the Magi. On Atroxus, call the swap to the Toxic Creeper at the first Monstrous Roar. Its aura hits all five of you until it dies. Two of the three DPS swapped within a second, and with the third it dies before anyone does.

You were behind both of them in the opener and on Raj'kess. You tied Arms Warrior on the big 3:24 gather, beat Arms Warrior on Taz'Rah, and were level on the trash after it. Atroxus is the one section where a low number is right. You moved onto the Toxic Creeper 0.7 seconds after it spawned and put 0.87M into it, against 0.46M into Atroxus.

Warcraft Logs ranks each of you against your own spec. Your Ret parses this season average 95 (best per dungeon) and 89 (median), and the hunter's BM parses 99 and 90. Both of you sit near the top of your specs, so part of the raw gap between a BM hunter and a Ret is the specs.

Why your opener was low

From the first hit to Raj'kess dying you did 204k a second. That is your lowest of the seven Voidscar openers in the archive where Raj'kess died:

key Wings in the opener your damage/s

Every opener with three Wings beat every opener with two. Today's opener ran 188 seconds, the longest of the seven, and still got two.

Your first Wings went out at 0:27, as the tank arrived at the Magi. It came back at 1:19 with the first pack still alive (its last mob died at 2:16) and sat ready through 51 seconds of fighting before you pressed it at 2:18. Part of that wait had a good reason. Here is the stretch:

1:19 Wings ready; you're in melee with the pack, tank and both Shamans within 4 yards
1:38 Shaman #1 dies (your kick at 1:33)
1:40 the tank moves up to Raj'kess and leaves Shaman #2 behind at the old spot
  1:46 Raj'kess pulled; you're on him from 1:48 to 1:56
1:58 Divine Steed back to Shaman #2 to stop it dropping totems out of reach
2:00 it drops a Magma Totem anyway; you kick its Lava Bolt at 2:05
2:05.7 Raj'kess starts a Forked Lightning on you (it bounces to 2 more players, so you stay out)
  2:16 Shaman #2 dies; Wings at 2:18, back on Raj'kess at 2:20

Going back for the Shaman was the right call, and Forked Lightning on you kept you out of the pack for its cast. So 1:58 to 2:16 isn't a mistake. That leaves about 30 seconds where Wings was ready and you were next to a target that would live 20 seconds or more. From 1:19 to 1:40 you were in the pack, and from 1:48 to 1:58 you were on Raj'kess.

What it cost. Inside Wings you did 235k a second to Raj'kess, and 67k in the 32 seconds before it. Pressed at 1:48 on Raj'kess, Wings is back around 2:40 and he gets two windows before he dies at 3:17. Pressed at 1:19, the pack gets the window instead. Either way it's one window, roughly 4M damage at the Raj'kess rate. You did 8.2M to Raj'kess against Arms Warrior' 10.6M and the hunter's 9.2M.

Was it the gather?

Mostly not. Guardian Druid picked up the first pack at 0:10 and walked it about 85 yards to the Voidtouched Magi. The hunter's Kill Command at 0:29 is the hit that pulled the Magi; it began a Shadowbolt Volley in the same millisecond. You pressed Wings at 0:27, as the pack arrived and two seconds before the Magi joined, so your first Wings covered the whole gather. Your first damage landed at 0:21, before both other DPS.

In chat you said you weren't sure the tank was going all the way to the Magi and sent cooldowns anyway. That press was right. What cost you in the opener was the hold after it, in the note above.

The Atroxus wipe, second by second

Monstrous Roar summons a Toxic Creeper. Its Toxic Aura hits all five players about every half second, roughly 160k a second each, until it dies. The boss plan in 03-retribution says kill it.

  15:02.4 Monstrous Roar
15:06.4 Toxic Creeper spawns, 4.06M health; Toxic Aura on all five
15:06.8 BM Hunter presses Bestial Wrath, target Atroxus
  15:07.1 Hyporock on the Creeper
15:07.4 Arms Warrior on the Creeper
15:11.6 Guardian Druid's Moonfire on the Creeper
  ~15:15 Creeper at 58%
15:16.5 Poison Pool under Resto Shaman, 3 ticks for 728k
15:17.5 Hyporock's Lay on Hands on self, at 30%
15:20.5 Resto Shaman dies (Creeper at 29%)
  15:21.2 BM Hunter dies (26%)
  15:22.2 Hyporock dies (23%)
  15:23.3 Arms Warrior dies (21%)
15:26.5 Guardian Druid dies to Hulking Claw, Atroxus at 62%

Damage into the Creeper while it lived, by player. Arms Warrior 1.60M, Hyporock 0.87M, BM Hunter 0.47M, Guardian Druid 0.22M, Resto Shaman 0.16M.

All 11 of BM Hunter's aimed casts while the Creeper lived (Kill Command, Cobra Shot, Barbed Shot, Wild Thrash) named Atroxus. His 0.47M on the Creeper came from Stampede and his cleave effects. He put about 3.3M into Atroxus before he died. Moved onto the Creeper one for one, that kills it at about 15:15.8, almost five seconds before the first death. Treat that as the best case, since part of a BM hunter's damage is cleave either way and the healer's Poison Pool ticks would still have landed. It is still the only change in the log that ends the aura before anybody dies. The log can't say why he stayed on the boss.

The chat claims, checked against the log

  • Hunter, "100k DPS ahead of them overall". He was the top DPS. For the whole key he did 146k against 126k and 121k, so 20-26k ahead. Counting only fighting time it's 41-53k.
  • Hunter, "key was dead". Taz'Rah died at 10:21, 35 seconds behind your timed +16 from Saturday (9:46), with one death so far. Atroxus was pulled 20 seconds behind it. That run timed at 25:42 of 30:00. A +17 has more health, so this isn't like for like, but nothing in the log says the key was over before the wipe.
  • Hunter, "the War intentionally killed me during trinket". At 8:14.6 a Nether Dash aimed at Arms Warrior ran on through him. He stood 18 yards behind Arms Warrior and 0.0 yards off the shade's line. Both of them had moved about 10 yards in the last four seconds, so neither was standing still. A dash runs about 50 yards past its target, and a log can't show intent. His own dash hit two seconds later and killed him, with no defensive pressed. You battle-rezzed him three seconds after that.
  • Hunter (via Guardian Druid), "you don't have anything that makes a ret pally good". See the sims below.
  • You, "SOMEBODY didn't focus add". The log agrees, see the Atroxus note.
  • You, "weird gather on first pull messed up my CDs". Mostly not, see "Was it the gather?". The cooldown you lost was the one you held afterwards.
  • Resto Shaman, "pali low dps". Third of three DPS for the key, 5k a second behind Arms Warrior. The held opener Wings is most of it.

The gear the hunter says you're missing, simmed

Guardian Druid's read of the whisper was the Ula'tek trinket and the Zul'jin weapon. In game those are Voracious Heart of Ula'tek, an on-use trinket from Ula'tek, and Maze-roa, Warlord's Fury, the two-handed axe from Coiled Altar. Maze-roa is half of the Bite of Zul'jan set. The other half is Zul'jin's Guillotine Technique, a trinket from the same boss. SimC models all three, set bonus included, so the rows below test the axe alone, the set, the Heart, and everything at once.

With everything at 334 you gain about 4% with full raid buffs and 4.2% with only Bloodlust. In this key's terms that is about 10k a second of your 250k per fighting second, against the 53k the hunter was ahead. All of it together closes about a fifth of the gap, and the held Wings and the opener cost you more than the missing items did.

Most of the gain is the set. Either item alone is worth well under 1%, about what your boots craft was worth on 10-03 (+0.49%).

At the item level they'd drop for you, they make you worse. 318 is what a Heroic Voidcore pays (from the 09-22 vault notes). The Maze-roa rows at 318 lose 3-4% because your current two-hander, Malignant Toothed Edge, is already 334. Getting there takes the drops (a Coiled Altar Voidcore is a 1-in-5 roll among Ret items) and 80 Myth crests per trinket. Per the 09-22 notes the axe upgrades for free on your 334 two-hand watermark. If you ever get both Coiled Altar pieces, they're worth wearing. Neither one is something a Ret needs to be good.

What you got wrong

  • Wings sat ready for about 30 seconds while you were next to a target, 1:19 to 1:40 in the pack and 1:48 to 1:58 on Raj'kess. The other 20 seconds of the hold went to chasing the left-behind Shaman and Forked Lightning on you, which was right. Still one lost window, about 4M damage, and the main reason Raj'kess was your weakest section.
  • At 0:56 your Rebuke went to an Enthralled Shaman just as its Lava Bolt finished, so it stopped nothing. The Magi was mid-Shadowbolt Volley beside you and Arms Warrior' Pummel was on cooldown. The Volley landed at 0:58, took you from full to 37%, and cost your Divine Shield at 0:59. The Volley hits all five of you, so it's the better kick when both are casting.
  • On the 3:24 gather your first damage came 13 seconds after the tank's pull, against Arms Warrior' 7. The pack was stacked by about 3:31 and you opened with Wings at 3:37. A few seconds lost, small.
  • Cleanse Toxins never went out. Poison Splash was left up twice (60 seconds in all) and did no damage, so it cost nothing this time.

What you did right

  • 15 interrupts, the most in the group. The hunter landed 3.
  • Battle rez on BM Hunter at 8:19, three seconds after he died on Taz'Rah.
  • On the Toxic Creeper 0.7 seconds after it spawned, and on it until you died.
  • Four Wings windows in the 210-second Taz'Rah fight, and more damage on it than Arms Warrior.
  • Tied for the most damage on the big 3:24 gather after a late start.
  • Lay on Hands on yourself at 30% on Atroxus, the only cooldown you had left. Divine Shield, Divine Protection and Blessing of Protection were all still cooling down.

How these numbers were made

Log WoWCombatLog-100526_081003.txt, keydb 2026-10-05_1310. Damage is amount plus absorbed, pets folded into their owners, enemy NPCs only. Sections are fixed time windows, so their rates include downtime inside them. Wings windows come from the Avenging Wrath aura (24 seconds). The opener comparison runs from the first hit to Raj'kess dying, in every archived Voidscar key where he died.

The Creeper line (it dies at 15:15.8) moves BM Hunter's Atroxus damage onto the Creeper one for one from its spawn, so it's an upper bound. The pace comparison is against a +16, a level lower.

Sims are local SimC (engine built 10-03), files 03-retribution/tools/simc-hunter-wishlist-2026-10-05.simc and its -bloodlust-only twin. The log doesn't carry crafted stats, so the 331 boots are read as the Mastery/Crit craft from 10-03. Item level 334 uses the Myth 6/6 bonus ids of your other raid pieces. 318 is an ilevel override.
