The second Thundering Storm found three players with no defensive, and the one orb left alive blasted everyone mid-storm.

The group reached Raj'kess and wiped during his second Thundering Storm. Each pulse of that storm hits everyone for about 260k, and nobody below tank health survives the whole storm without help. Disc Priest, Hyporock and Enh Shaman took it with nothing pressed, because their personals had gone on the first storm or earlier. The last orb of the second set had only Affli Lock's damage over time on it until 8 seconds into its cast. It finished the cast at a quarter health and hit everyone for about 160k in the middle of the storm. Disc Priest then died to the final pulse by 49k, so that orb decided the healer's death. The fault is shared between the orb split and the empty second storm.

Orbs first

You hit the first orb of the second set less than a second after it spawned, killed it, then used Divine Steed to reach the last one. Only Enh Shaman put more damage into that set (keydb).

The one change

PRESSDivine Protection

WHEN
When Raj'kess starts casting Thundering Storm
WHY
It was ready for the first storm and went out 5 seconds after it ended. When you pressed it on the second storm the game refused it, because it was still recharging.
PAYOFF
Its damage cut plus the Shield of Vengeance that comes with it would have carried you past the fourth pulse and the orb hit. Storms come about 33 seconds apart, so Lay on Hands or Divine Shield covers the other one.

How it went

  1. 2:13CascadeHyporock, Disc Priest, Enh Shaman and Affli Lock in 15 s, to Thundering Storm and Forked Lightning. Hyporock went first. No defensive pressed in any of them.
  2. 2:47The key was dropped 2:47 in, with 26:22 left on the timer.

What to change, biggest first

  1. Hyporock: Divine Protection on the first Thundering Storm cast, Lay on Hands or Divine Shield on the second
  2. Name orb targets before Raj'kess: two melee orbs, one ranged, boss only after
  3. Every player brings a personal to both storms; Disc Priest keeps Pain Suppression for the second

What the group changes together

Each set of orbs finishes its 13-second cast during the next Thundering Storm, so a live orb adds its blast to the storm. During the second set the party put about as much damage into Raj'kess as into the orbs, and the last orb went off with 285k left (keydb). Call the orbs before the pull, with melee on the two near the boss and Affli Lock on the far one, and leave Raj'kess alone until all three are dead. Plan defensives in two rounds as well. Most personals cover only one storm, and the second came about 33 seconds after the first. In the retry at 15:28 every orb died, and all five lived through the second storm.

Notes

Where the numbers need a second look

Was it lack of damage on the orbs

Partly, and it was the split more than the total. The first set died in 8.5, 9.1 and 12.4 s. In the second set the party did 3.06M to the orbs before the blast against the 3.34M the three needed, while 3.0M went into Raj'kess, mostly cleave, damage over time and procs (keydb). Hyporock reached the last orb 7.6 s after it spawned and found it at 68%. Without the orb's 160k Disc Priest lives on about 114k. Hyporock still dies on the fifth pulse unless he has a defensive. In the retry all six orbs died within 12 s.

What Disrupting Blast does

Disrupting Blast (1311730) is the orb's 13 s cast. When it completes it hits all five for about 155k to 165k and leaves a 20 s debuff. That debuff did not change the storm pulses: Disc Priest took 260,083 before and after it, and Hyporock 256k to 267k. A second cast started at once, so a surviving orb keeps blasting until it dies.
