Wrong targetOverseer's shield ignored through SlamsgroupBad pullgripped Overseer pack with Harrower aliveBlood DKTipSwap to the Overseer when Brutal Slams starts

Brutal Slams ran for 22 seconds because 76% of the party's damage went into the Brawler, Shaman and Harrower instead of the Overseer's 4.0M shield; four people died inside it.

Abandoned at 12:37 after the pull past Taz'Rah wiped, and the timer went with it: the two deaths already banked plus five inside that pull put the in-game clock past 30:00 for the rest of the route, so leaving was the right call. Until then the key was on pace. The 09-15 +15 that timed with 3:14 to spare reached this same pull at 10:15; this group reached it at 10:33, on course for a +1 with about two minutes in hand.

Whose fault: nobody's alone, and not the healer's. The pull past Taz'Rah is two packs, and the second holds a Brutal Overseer whose Brutal Slams is a 30-second, party-wide, unavoidable hit that grows 10% per slam and stops only when the 4.03M shield he puts on himself is broken. That shield is about five seconds of this party's combined damage. It stood for 22 seconds, because while the slams ran the party landed 12.8M on the Dominated Brawler, the Enthralled Shaman and the Watchful Harrower and 4.0M on the shield. Ele Shaman, Hyporock, Resto Druid and Arcane Mage died between 11:50 and 12:07 with the slams still going.

Two decisions set it up. The Harrower from the first pack, 31.1M health and the biggest thing in the pull, was still alive at 38% when Blood DK gripped the Overseer pack in at 11:33, so its Sky Strike (1.4M across four people) landed in the same second the shield went up. And Resto Druid's Tranquility, last used at 5:01 on a three-minute cooldown, was available for all 22 seconds and stayed on the bar.

What to change, biggest first

  1. Everyone: when Brutal Slams starts casting (two seconds), swap to the Overseer and stay on him until the shield pops. It is 4.03M, five seconds of this party. Nothing else in the pull matters until it is gone.
  2. Kill the Watchful Harrower before the Overseer pack is touched, ideally first in its own pack. Its Sky Strike and the slams overlapping is what killed four people.
  3. Blood DK: hold the grip until the Harrower is dead, and press Anti-Magic Shell and Icebound Fortitude for Sky Strike and Void Beam, not after the slams.
  4. Resto Druid: Tranquility into Brutal Slams. It was off cooldown from 8:01 and the slams ran 11:44 to 12:06.
  5. Ele Shaman: a defensive before the death. Astral Shift on Taz'Rah's Umbral Rupture and again for the slams; Capacitor Totem and Earth Elemental were never pressed.
  6. Assign the second Shaman's Lava Bolt when the Overseer pack is pulled: 14 of 30 leaked, the only kick the group missed.

Notes

Where the numbers need a second look

The pull past Taz'Rah, second by second

Pack A (Enthralled Shaman, Savage Shredclaw, Kilivore Screamer) was engaged at 10:32. The Watchful Harrower flies in from about 50 yards ten seconds later; its first action at 10:42 was a swing on Blood DK, which is where it belongs. Screamer dead 11:07, Shaman and Shredclaw 11:16. That left the Harrower at 45%; it lost 9% in the 17 seconds before the group moved on.

At 11:32 Resto Druid pressed Stampeding Roar, Blood DK pressed Death Grip, and pack B (Brutal Overseer, a second Enthralled Shaman, Dominated Brawler) was in the fight by 11:36, with the Harrower still up at 38%. The Harrower started a Sky Strike at 11:37 and the Overseer started Brutal Slams at 11:42.3. Sky Strike landed at 11:42.5 for 1.41M across Ele Shaman, Blood DK, Resto Druid and Arcane Mage; the shield went up at 11:44.3.

  11:50 Ele Shaman slams 907k + Sky Strike 505k over 7.6 s
  11:54 Hyporock slams 973k + Void Beam 737k over 13.6 s (Divine Protection pressed at 11:44)
12:05 Resto Druid slams 2.98M over 13.5 s; the 3.1M healed in that window was his own Regrowth, Swiftmend and Wild Growth, 14k from anyone else
12:06 Arcane Mage slams 905k + Searing Magma 393k over 4.3 s (Prismatic Barrier up)

The shield broke at 12:06.6, 22.3 seconds after it went up, with only Blood DK standing. Ele Shaman was back by 12:21 and died again to Void Beam and Searing Magma. When the log ends at 12:37 the Harrower is at 17% and nothing in pack B has died.

Where the damage went while the slams ran

The tooltip is plain: the Overseer shields himself and slams the ground every 1.5 seconds for 30 seconds, hitting everyone at any range, each slam 10% harder than the last. No positioning answer, no dispel; the shield is the off switch. It is exactly 4,032,014 at +15 in both of today's keys and ate 0.7% of the party's damage all key. The cost was never the shield; it was the 10.0M of slams (29% of everything the pull did) that landed while it stood.

During the 22.3 seconds:

  into the shield 4.03M
  Dominated Brawler 4.87M
  Enthralled Shaman 4.01M
  Watchful Harrower 3.87M
Arcane Mage 1.77M into the shield, 5.59M elsewhere
  Hyporock 0.95M 3.71M
  Blood DK 0.66M 2.26M
  Ele Shaman 0.34M 1.06M

In the first five seconds after the shield appeared the party put 1.14M into it and 3.48M into other targets. Arcane Mage put the most into it, and still three-quarters of his damage went elsewhere. Nobody was slacking; everyone was cleaving a stacked pack and the Brawler and Shaman absorbed the cleave. The fix is a target swap, not more damage.

For scale, the 09-15 +15 and 09-13 +14 clears each broke two of these shields (8.05M and 7.33M absorbed, i.e. 4.03M and 3.66M apiece, the usual 1.10x per key level) and Brutal Slams did not reach the party-wide damage list on either page.

The Watchful Harrower

31.1M health, against 20.2M for the Overseer and 11-14M for everything else in the pull, so it takes the longest to kill and it was hit last both times today. Sky Strike is a five-second cast that charges someone and hits everyone within 10 yards; the tooltip says the damage is shared among those hit, and the group stacked for it correctly every time (four or five of five caught), taking 260-540k each, roughly half a DPS's 0.86M health bar. Three casts did 4.6M, 13% of the pull. Void Beam is a two-second cast then a four-second puddle: 2.7M. And its melee is the hardest in the pull: 3.2M on Blood DK, more than every other mob's swings on him combined.

Sky Strike and Void Beam are Nature and Shadow, so a Blood DK's Anti-Magic Shell and Zone answer both. Blood DK pressed Anti-Magic Shell once, at 12:10, after the slams had ended, and Icebound Fortitude never. The slams themselves are Physical and neither helps with them.

The Harrower alive beside the Overseer is what made this pull different from the 09-15 clear: its Sky Strike arrived in the same second as the shield, and it took 3.87M of damage that belonged on the shield.

The two deaths already banked, and how to read the grades

Resto Druid at 1:07 in the entrance pack: a Shadowbolt Volley for 1.12M, a four-second cast that is the one thing in this dungeon worth a million per landing (2 of 7 leaked this key), plus Savage Leap and Lava Bolt. Hyporock's Lay on Hands at 0:58 bought nine seconds. Lava Bolt was the group's one leak: 14 of 30 got through, against 89% of everything else stopped.

Ele Shaman at 9:05 on Taz'Rah: Umbral Rupture for 806k, a shade's ground effect that did zero damage on the 09-13 clear because nobody stood in it, plus 946k of Nether Dash. That is a position. None of Ele Shaman's three deaths had a defensive pressed in the window; Astral Shift went three times all key.

On the grades: an abandoned key, so every axis describes 12.6 minutes and a wipe. Hyporock's mechanics 79 (Forked Lightning x11, peers 0) is the grader's cohort-of-one artifact: he is the only melee DPS and the ranged took it 7 and 7 times; there is nothing there. Resto Druid's throughput 71 means he covered 75% of the healing the party needed on a key that asked 161k per second, past the 95th percentile of every key this scale was cut on; read it as a floor, and note 18.4M healed in this one pull. Blood DK's mitigation 45 is real: 53% uptime of the 76% a Blood DK can hold, half the worst windows covered.
